Quick answer

Which Australian or New Zealand city should you fly into from the UK?

Choose the city by where your trip ends. Only London to Perth is flown nonstop from the UK, and only outbound; every other Australian and New Zealand arrival connects once. New Zealand is not automatically the dearer half of this map.

Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL), Brisbane (BNE), Adelaide (ADL) and Perth (PER) sit on different one-stop routings through the Gulf or Asia. Auckland (AKL), Christchurch (CHC) and Wellington (WLG) add a further sector beyond that.

Routing checked 12 September 2026: Qantas flies London to Perth nonstop, but the Perth to London return currently routes via Singapore, and schedules are confirmed on your quote.

Pick the arrival city first, then compare routings there — a single "Australia from £x" figure hides the sector that actually differs.

  • Nine arrivals across Australia and New Zealand
  • London–Perth is nonstop outbound only
  • Every other UK route connects once
  • New Zealand adds a sector beyond the Australian gateways
  • Three New Zealand arrivals: Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington
  • Routing checked 12 September 2026

How to choose your Australian arrival city

Most guides sort Australian cities by what there is to see. That is not the decision a UK premium-cabin traveller is actually making. The useful sort is by journey shape: whether anything is nonstop, how many sectors you sit through, and whether the last leg is an international arrival or an Australian domestic flight.

Fly into the city where your trip actually ends. Choosing a cheaper arrival and adding a domestic sector across the continent only works if that sector is on the same ticket — otherwise a delayed long-haul becomes your problem, not the airline's.

Is any UK to Australia flight nonstop?

Almost every page on this subject answers with a single sentence: London to Perth is the only direct route. That is true outbound and it is not the whole picture right now.

  • London to Perth is nonstop. Qantas operates the outbound sector directly to Perth (PER) on a Boeing 787-9.
  • Perth to London stops until 1 February 2027. The westbound return routes via Singapore rather than flying nonstop, after Middle East airspace restrictions left the aircraft without enough payload margin on that sector. Qantas has scheduled the Singapore routing for westbound services between 25 October 2026 and 31 January 2027, with the nonstop returning from 1 February 2027.
  • Sydney is due to gain a nonstop in October 2027. Qantas plans a daily Sydney to London Heathrow service on the Airbus A350-1000ULR, with seats expected to go on sale in February 2027.
  • Everything else connects once, through the Gulf or Asia.

Routing checked 12 September 2026. Schedules this far ahead do change, so we verify the actual routing on your quote rather than promising it here — but the westbound stop is a scheduled arrangement with a published end date, not an open-ended suspension.

If you are booking a return trip, this matters: planning both legs at “a little over 17 hours” currently mis-plans the journey home by several hours.

How long does the journey actually take?

Australia is ultra-long-haul from the UK, but the spread between cities is wide enough to change which city you choose.

  • Perth is the shortest: the nonstop from London runs a little over 17 hours. The current westbound routing via Singapore pushes the return past 20 hours.
  • East coast cities are typically around 22 hours elapsed on a one-stop — commonly quoted at roughly 22h20 from Manchester and 22h35 from London to Sydney.
  • Alice Springs adds an Australian domestic sector on top of the long-haul, so plan it as a two-flight day.

The number that moves most is the connection, not the airline. A short, well-timed transfer can save more elapsed hours than switching carrier.

The three ways to fly there, and what each one costs you

UK to Australia premium itineraries fall into three recognisable shapes.

  • Kangaroo (via Perth or Singapore): the shortest total flying time to Western Australia and the only nonstop sector available from the UK. The trade is limited city choice and, at present, an asymmetric return.
  • Gulf one-stop (Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi): the widest frequency and the broadest choice of Australian arrival cities, including Adelaide. The trade is a longer total journey and a connection in the middle of the night on some schedules.
  • Asia one-stop (Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok): often the most comfortable split of two sectors, and the easiest to turn into a stopover. The trade is that not every Australian city is served daily from every Asian hub.

Confirm the aircraft before you commit to a cabin: within any one airline the seat can differ significantly between aircraft types on the same route.

Does your UK departure airport change the route?

It changes the connection more than the destination. Heathrow carries the widest long-haul choice and is where the Perth nonstop operates. Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle usually feed a Gulf or Asian hub instead, which is not automatically worse — it can remove a domestic positioning flight or an overnight hotel before an early departure.

The fare effect is not uniform across Australian cities. On current guide fares Manchester is effectively level with London for Brisbane, while Newcastle sits well above London for Melbourne. Because the pattern differs by city, the departure table for each city is the place to compare, not a single national figure.

Can you do two Australian cities on one trip?

Usually yes, and it is normally better handled as a domestic add-on to the same international ticket rather than as two separate returns. Booking two separate tickets is how travellers lose a day and a fare rule when the long-haul runs late, because the second ticket has no obligation to protect you.

The same principle applies to Alice Springs and the Red Centre: the domestic sector should sit on the same ticket as the long-haul wherever possible. Note that Qantas suspended the Alice Springs to Melbourne route indefinitely in 2026, so a Melbourne long-haul now means a second domestic stop rather than one.

New Zealand: three arrivals, one more sector

Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington sit beyond the Australian gateways, so a New Zealand itinerary is normally an Australian or Asian connection plus a further sector. That extra leg is the thing to get onto one ticket, for the same reason a domestic Australian add-on should be: a separate booking has no obligation to protect you when the long-haul runs late.

What surprises people is the price. New Zealand is further away and is not automatically the dearer half of this map. The figures sit on each arrival with the date they were checked, which is where to compare them rather than here.

How these fares work

There is no single “Australia from £x” fare, because there is no single Australian journey. Nine arrivals with different second sectors price differently, and a country-level figure is the easiest way to end up quoted for a city you did not want. Each city page carries its own fare.

Each city page carries its own indicative fare with the date it was checked and the UK airport it belongs to, and where our own figures do not yet agree with each other we suppress the headline and quote instead of publishing a number we cannot stand behind. Tell us the city, the UK airport and your dates and we will price the itinerary properly.

What moves these fares

Across the 9 arrivals in this group the guide fares currently run from £2,769 for Christchurch to £3,477 for Melbourne — one region, two very different tickets.

Within a single arrival, the UK airport you start from does more work than most travellers expect. We can price 9 of these 9 arrivals from more than one UK airport — London, Birmingham (BHX), Glasgow (GLA), Manchester (MAN), Newcastle (NCL) — and on 6 of them the cheapest departure is not London. The widest gap in the group is Sydney: £3,130 from London against £3,940 from Newcastle (NCL) — the same journey, on the same dates.

Three things move these numbers beyond the departure airport: your travel dates, how much of the cabin is still open when you book, and which airline and routing the ticket uses. None of them shows in a headline price, which is why we price your own dates before anything is committed. How our fares work sets out the method in full — what a guide fare is, how the “from” figure is chosen, and the claims we do not make about it.

Australia business class FAQs

Country-level questions. City-specific detail stays on the city pages.

Choosing your arrival city

Which Australian city should I fly into from the UK in business class?

Fly into the city where you need to be. Sydney (SYD) is New South Wales, Melbourne (MEL) Victoria, Brisbane (BNE) Queensland, Perth (PER) Western Australia and Adelaide (ADL) South Australia, while Alice Springs (ASP) in the Northern Territory is reached on an Australian domestic sector rather than an international arrival. Do not pick the cheapest arrival and then add a domestic flight across the continent unless that sector is on the same ticket.

Which Australian city has the shortest flight from the UK?

Perth (PER), by a wide margin. It is the closest Australian capital to the UK and the only one with a nonstop service from London. If total time in the air is your priority and Western Australia works for your trip, Perth is the shortest journey; if your destination is on the east coast, the extra hours are unavoidable.

What about Adelaide compared with Melbourne or Brisbane?

Adelaide (ADL) is reached on its own one-stop services — Qatar Airways, Emirates and Singapore Airlines all connect Adelaide to their hubs — so it does not require a Melbourne or Sydney long-haul plus a domestic sector, which is the common assumption. If your trip is in Victoria use Melbourne, in Queensland use Brisbane, and in South Australia use Adelaide directly. Checked 12 September 2026.

How do I reach Alice Springs and the Red Centre from the UK?

Alice Springs (ASP) has no international flights, so every UK journey is a long-haul into an Australian gateway followed by a domestic sector. Sydney is the most dependable connection with daily services, and Brisbane and Adelaide also connect. Qantas suspended the Alice Springs–Melbourne route indefinitely in 2026, so routing through Melbourne now means a second domestic stop rather than one. Checked 12 September 2026.

The journey

Is there a nonstop flight between the UK and Australia?

In one direction, yes. Qantas flies London Heathrow to Perth nonstop, but the Perth to London return currently routes via Singapore rather than operating nonstop, a change made after Middle East airspace restrictions left the Boeing 787-9 short of payload margin westbound. Checked 12 September 2026. Sydney is due to gain a nonstop to London in October 2027, with seats expected on sale in February 2027. Every other UK–Australia journey connects once.

Does my UK departure airport change the route to Australia?

It changes the connection more than the destination. Heathrow carries the widest long-haul choice and is where the Perth nonstop operates; Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle usually feed a Gulf or Asian hub instead. The fare effect is not uniform across cities — on current guide fares Manchester is level with London for Brisbane while Newcastle sits well above London for Melbourne — so compare the origin table on the city page you actually want.

Qatar or Emirates for Australia?

Both are one-stop Gulf options and both reach more Australian cities than the Kangaroo route does, including Adelaide. Qatar Airways connects through Doha and its selling point is Qsuite on equipped aircraft; Emirates connects through Dubai, where the onboard product is also aircraft-specific. Confirm which aircraft operates your sectors before choosing on cabin, because the seat can differ within the same airline. City-level comparison stays on the city pages.

How long does the UK to Australia journey take?

Perth is the shortest: the London–Perth nonstop runs a little over 17 hours, and the current westbound routing via Singapore pushes the return past 20 hours. East-coast cities are typically around 22 hours elapsed on a one-stop — commonly quoted at roughly 22h20 from Manchester and 22h35 from London to Sydney. The connection length, not the airline, is what moves those totals.

Fares and booking

When is business class to Australia expensive?

Australian summer and Christmas/New Year into the east coast are the tight premium windows. School holidays and late booking against a thin cabin also push fares up. Shoulder periods can be kinder. We will not publish a guaranteed cheapest month.

Can I do Sydney and Melbourne on one ticket?

Often yes, as a domestic add-on on the same international ticket. Two separate returns are how people waste a day and a fare rule. Tell us both cities.
