Quick answer

Should you book Sydney now or wait for the nonstop?

Book now. The Qantas nonstop between Sydney and London is scheduled for October 2027 with seats expected on sale in February 2027, so it cannot be booked for travel before then and should not change the ticket you buy today.

Today Sydney is a one-stop from the UK. Qantas flies QF1 and QF2 via Singapore on the A380 as a through-flight with a stop rather than a connection; the Gulf and Asian carriers offer genuine connections, often cheaper and more frequent from regional UK airports.

Routes, dates and airport status checked 12 September 2026. Business class guide fares start from £3,130 return from London (LON), checked; the cabin on each sector is confirmed on your quote.

Check which Sydney airport your ticket uses — Western Sydney International opens to passengers on 25 October 2026, 44 km west of the CBD.

  • No UK-Sydney nonstop yet; one stop either way
  • Qantas nonstop scheduled for October 2027
  • Seats expected on sale February 2027
  • QF1/QF2 via Singapore is a stop, not a connection
  • Western Sydney (WSI) opens 25 October 2026
  • WSI is about 44 km west of the Sydney CBD

Sydney is the only Australian city where the right answer depends on when you are flying. Two dated changes land here and nowhere else: a second international airport opens to passengers on 25 October 2026, and Qantas is scheduled to start flying London nonstop in October 2027. Everything else here is about telling those apart from what you can actually book today.

What you can book today

There is no nonstop between the UK and Sydney yet. Today every business class itinerary stops once, and the options divide into two kinds that are not the same product:

  • A through-flight with a stop. Qantas flies London to Sydney as QF2 and Sydney to London as QF1, via Singapore, on the Airbus A380. It carries one flight number the whole way and you stay with the same aircraft — a stop, not a connection. Total elapsed time is around 23 to 24 hours. There is no separate flight to miss, and your bags are not re-cleared at the hub.
  • A genuine connection. Every other one-stop option — Gulf carriers through Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi, Asian carriers through Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok — is two flights with a connection between them. Often cheaper, often more frequent from regional UK airports, but it is a connection, with everything that implies if the first sector runs late.

That distinction is worth more than most people give it credit for on a 24-hour journey. It is also the main reason to pay attention to which one-stop you are being quoted. Checked 12 September 2026.

The nonstop: real, dated, and not yet bookable

Qantas has scheduled a daily nonstop between Sydney and London Heathrow from October 2027, flown by the Airbus A350-1000ULR — an aircraft built specifically for the sector. The first of twelve aircraft is due to be delivered in April 2027, and seats are expected to go on sale in February 2027. The flight is expected to run about 22 hours.

What that means practically: if you are booking travel before late 2027, the nonstop is not an option, and nothing about it should change the ticket you buy now. If you are planning a 2028 trip and the nonstop matters to you, the date to diarise is the February 2027 on-sale, not the October 2027 launch. We will not hold a booking against an unannounced fare. Checked 12 September 2026.

Sydney is becoming a two-airport city — check which one your ticket uses

This is the change most likely to catch a UK traveller out in the next twelve months. Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton), code WSI, begins passenger operations on 25 October 2026. It is not a replacement for Sydney Airport and it is not close to it.

The commercial point is simple. If your hotel is in the CBD, the eastern suburbs or the north shore, arriving at WSI instead of SYD is roughly 36 km of extra ground transfer at the end of a 23-hour journey. If you are staying in western Sydney, or the Blue Mountains are on the itinerary, WSI may be the better arrival. Either way it is now a question to ask, and until recently it was not. We name the arrival airport explicitly on every Sydney quote. Checked 12 September 2026.

If you are weighing Sydney against another Australian arrival, our Australia hub sets out the six cities by journey shape rather than by price.

What your UK departure costs for Sydney

Business class to Sydney starts from £3,130 return from London (LON), checked. The rest of the UK carries a real premium on this route:

The shape is the usual Australian one: London cheapest, with the premium widening the further north you start — Newcastle sits several hundred pounds above it. Because every Sydney itinerary connects somewhere anyway, it is worth pricing a London departure plus rail against a regional departure before you commit to either.

Business, premium economy and first to Sydney

  • Business class on the QF1/QF2 A380 is a four-cabin aircraft, so the business cabin sits below both first and, on that aircraft, a separate premium economy. On the Gulf and Asian one-stops it is a lie-flat bed on both sectors.
  • Premium economy is available on most carriers serving Sydney and is priced well below business. On sectors this long the difference between a large seat and a flat bed is the whole decision — we price both so you can judge it.
  • First class is genuinely available to Sydney on some carriers, including on the A380, which is not true of every Australian city. If first class is the point of the trip, Sydney is the Australian arrival most likely to support it end to end.

Before you book Sydney

  • Ask whether your itinerary is a through-flight with a stop or a true connection. On a 24-hour journey they are different products.
  • Confirm the arrival airport is SYD unless you have deliberately chosen WSI — and check it again for travel from late October 2026 onward.
  • If you are travelling in 2028 or later and the nonstop matters, note the February 2027 on-sale date rather than waiting for the October 2027 launch.
  • Confirm the cabin and aircraft on both sectors, not just the fare code.
  • If the trip also takes in the Red Centre, Sydney is the gateway that keeps a business cabin on the final leg — see our Alice Springs page.

FAQs

What do travellers ask about business class to Sydney?

Prefer to talk? +447348617176 .

Is £3,130 a live price?

No. From £3,130 is a starting return — the ticket you fly moves with dates, airline, routing and availability. We requote if it has moved.

Is there a nonstop flight from London to Sydney?

Not yet. Qantas has scheduled a daily nonstop between Sydney and London Heathrow from October 2027 using the Airbus A350-1000ULR, with the first aircraft due in April 2027 and seats expected on sale in February 2027. The flight is expected to take about 22 hours. Until then every UK-Sydney business class itinerary stops once. Checked 12 September 2026.

Should I wait for the Qantas nonstop before booking Sydney?

Only if your trip is in late 2027 or later. The service cannot be booked for travel before October 2027, and the fare has not been published, so there is nothing to compare a current quote against. If the nonstop matters to you, the date to watch is the expected February 2027 on-sale rather than the launch itself.

What is the difference between QF1 and a one-stop connection?

QF1 and QF2 carry a single flight number from Sydney to London and back via Singapore on the same Airbus A380, so the Singapore stop is a stop rather than a connection — there is no second flight to miss and no re-clearing of bags at the hub. Every other one-stop option is two separate flights with a connection between them, which is often cheaper and more frequent but carries connection risk.

Which Sydney airport will my flight use?

Sydney Airport (SYD) at Kingsford Smith, about 8 km south of the CBD, unless you have deliberately chosen otherwise. Western Sydney International (WSI) at Badgerys Creek begins passenger operations on 25 October 2026 and sits about 44 km west of the CBD. Singapore Airlines has announced daily WSI services from 23 November 2026. We name the arrival airport on every quote. Checked 12 September 2026.

Will Emirates or Qatar Airways fly to Western Sydney International?

Both received Australian government clearance in May 2026 for up to seven weekly services each, to Dubai and Doha respectively. Dates have not been confirmed and seats are not on sale, so this is an approval rather than a bookable schedule. We will not quote against a service that cannot yet be ticketed. Checked 12 September 2026.

Will the 2027 nonstop cost more than a one-stop to Sydney?

No fare has been published for it, so nobody can answer that yet — and anyone quoting one is guessing. Ultra-long-range aircraft carry fewer seats than the A380 currently flying the route via Singapore, which usually argues for a premium, but Qantas has not said. When seats go on sale, expected February 2027, we will price it against the one-stop options for the same dates.

How much does the UK departure airport change a Sydney fare?

Substantially. London is the lowest, and Newcastle sits several hundred pounds above it, with Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham in between. Because every Sydney itinerary connects somewhere anyway, it is worth pricing a London departure plus rail against a regional departure before committing to either.

How long does it take to fly to Sydney from the UK in business class?

It depends which kind of one-stop you take. The Qantas A380 through-service via Singapore runs about 23 to 24 hours elapsed; a Gulf or Asian connection is typically nearer 22 hours, because the hub stop is shorter than the Singapore turnaround. The 2027 nonstop is expected to take about 22 hours — the gain is in simplicity rather than in hours.

Is first class available from the UK to Sydney?

Yes, on some carriers and aircraft — Sydney is the Australian arrival most likely to support a first class cabin end to end, including on the A380. That is not true of every Australian city. We confirm which sectors a first class fare actually covers before you pay for it.

Is Sydney a good gateway for the rest of Australia?

It is the strongest single gateway. Sydney has the widest domestic network of any Australian arrival, and for the Red Centre in particular it is the gateway that keeps a business cabin on the final sector into Alice Springs. If your trip takes in more than one Australian city, starting at Sydney usually gives the most options on one ticket.

Is premium economy worth considering to Sydney?

On a 23-hour journey the gap between a large seat and a flat bed is significant, and so is the gap in price. Premium economy is available on most carriers serving Sydney, including on the Qantas A380 alongside first, business and economy. We price it beside business class rather than assuming which one you want.
