Quick answer
Can you reach the South Island without changing in Auckland?
Yes, on two hubs. Singapore Airlines flies Singapore to Christchurch daily, and Cathay Pacific flies Hong Kong to Christchurch three times a week from 1 November 2026 to 27 March 2027, rising to five weekly from December through February. Either is one change from the UK into the South Island.
That is a recent shape rather than a long-standing one. Air New Zealand is also adding Christchurch capacity to Singapore from 28 October 2026 and a Tokyo Narita service three times a week from 27 November 2026.
Published seasonal dates and frequencies are the airlines' plans and change. Our lowest indicative business class guide fare is £2,769 return from Glasgow (GLA), checked.
If the trip is Queenstown, Aoraki or the southern lakes, price Christchurch directly before you assume an Auckland arrival and a domestic sector.

The old answer to a South Island trip was to fly to Auckland and then fly again. That answer is now out of date, and the difference is worth several hours and a domestic boarding pass.
One change from the UK, straight into the South Island
Two hubs now put you into Christchurch (CHC) with a single change from the UK.
- Singapore. Singapore Airlines operates Christchurch to Singapore daily, in both directions. That is the year-round option and the one most UK itineraries will be built on.
- Hong Kong. Cathay Pacific flies the route three times a week between 1 November 2026 and 27 March 2027, increasing to five weekly from December through February — an addition the airport describes as another 13 return services and around 7,000 extra seats.
Air New Zealand is adding to the same picture: more Christchurch to Singapore capacity from 28 October 2026, and a Christchurch to Tokyo Narita service three times a week from 27 November 2026.
Taken together, that is a South Island airport acquiring genuine long-haul connectivity rather than acting as a domestic spur. Published seasonal dates and frequencies are airline plans and do change; we confirm the pattern that actually applies to your dates.
The Hong Kong service is a season, and the season is short
It matters which side of the dates you fall on. The Cathay service runs through the southern summer and stops; outside that window the practical route into Christchurch is the Singapore one.
For a UK traveller the seasonal shape is convenient, because the South Island's walking, lakes and alpine season coincides with it. For a trip in the British summer — the New Zealand winter — it narrows, and the conversation becomes availability rather than a choice of hub. If you are travelling in July or August, ask earlier than you would otherwise.
If Hong Kong is the hub you are using, business class flights to Hong Kong sets out what that sector looks like from the UK side.
Why a Dubai routing is two stops here
This is the trap on this destination, and it is easy to fall into if you have flown to Auckland before. Emirates reaches Christchurch via Sydney, not nonstop from Dubai. A UK itinerary built that way is a Gulf change and then an Australian one — two stops, not one — even though the same carrier's Auckland service is a single change.
That is not a reason to avoid it. A Sydney stopover is a perfectly good idea if you want one. It is a reason to be explicit at the quote stage about whether you are asking for the fastest routing or a two-centre trip, because on Christchurch those produce visibly different itineraries.
Christchurch against Auckland
The two New Zealand arrivals now answer different trips rather than the same trip at different prices.
An open-jaw — into one island, out of the other — removes the internal backtrack entirely and is often the sensible shape for a first New Zealand trip. Tell us the itinerary rather than the airport and we will price it that way.
The UK departure that costs most here is London
Business class to Christchurch is £2,769 return from Glasgow (GLA), checked.
London is last of the five. It is worth stating plainly rather than leaving in a table, because it is the reverse of what most travellers expect: on our current Christchurch figures a London departure is the dearest of the UK starts we price, not the cheapest. All three of our New Zealand arrivals price cheapest from somewhere other than London.
Since every Christchurch itinerary connects in Asia anyway, there is no nonstop advantage tying you to a London departure. That makes this one of the more genuinely open routes we cover in terms of where you start.
Before you book Christchurch
- Check your dates against the southern summer window before assuming a Hong Kong routing is available.
- Ask whether the quote is one stop or two — on this destination a Gulf carrier may mean two.
- If you want both islands, ask for an open-jaw rather than a return to one airport.
- Do not assume a London departure is the cheapest here. On our current guide fares it is the dearest.
- Confirm the arrival is CHC, and tell us if you are continuing to Queenstown so the domestic sector goes on the same itinerary.
Christchurch is the South Island arrival, and on current figures one of the lowest guide fares of the nine. Our guide to business class across Australia and New Zealand puts it alongside the Australian cities.
FAQs
What do travellers ask about business class to Christchurch?
Prefer to talk? +447348617176 .
How much is business class to Christchurch from the UK?
The lowest guide fare for the South Island is £2,769 return, departing Glasgow (GLA), checked. That currently undercuts our Auckland figure, which surprises most people.
Can I reach Christchurch without going via Auckland?
Yes. Singapore Airlines flies Singapore to Christchurch daily, and Cathay Pacific flies Hong Kong to Christchurch for the southern summer. Either gives you a single change from the UK straight into the South Island.
When does the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong service run?
Three times a week between 1 November 2026 and 27 March 2027, rising to five weekly from December through February. The airport describes the increase as another 13 return services and around 7,000 extra seats.
What if I am travelling in the British summer?
That is the New Zealand winter, and the Hong Kong service does not run through it. The Singapore routing is the year-round one. Ask earlier than you would on a route with several hubs available all year.
Is Emirates a one-stop option to Christchurch?
No. Emirates reaches Christchurch via Sydney rather than nonstop from Dubai, so a UK itinerary that way is two stops. That is worth knowing if you have flown the same airline to Auckland, where it is one.
Should I fly to Christchurch or Auckland?
It depends on the island. Christchurch for Queenstown, Aoraki, the southern lakes and Canterbury; Auckland for the city, the Bay of Islands and the north. If you want both, an open-jaw usually beats a return to either.
Is Christchurch more expensive than Auckland?
Not on current guide fares — the Christchurch figure sits below the Auckland one, which is the opposite of what the distance suggests. Both are dated guide fares and both move with your dates.
Which UK airport is cheapest for Christchurch?
On current guide fares it is Glasgow (GLA). London is the dearest of the five departures for this route, which is unusual and worth checking before you default to it.
Can I add a flight to Queenstown?
Yes, and it is better on the same itinerary than bought separately. If the long-haul runs late, a connecting domestic sector on one ticket is the airline's responsibility rather than yours.
Which airport does this Christchurch fare use?
Christchurch International Airport (CHC), the South Island's main gateway.
Are there any other direct services into Christchurch?
The airport also lists direct flights to Australian cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Cairns, plus Guangzhou, Fiji, Rarotonga and Vanuatu. Most matter to a UK traveller only as a connecting option.
Are these Christchurch fares guaranteed?
No. They are dated indicative guide fares, checked, and on a seasonal route the figure depends heavily on whether your dates fall inside the published window.
How do I request a Christchurch business class quote?
Use the enquiry form above or email info@expertsbusinessfirst.co.uk. Tell us the month and whether you also want the North Island — on New Zealand those two answers shape the ticket.
