Is Virgin Atlantic Upper Class first class — and is the Retreat Suite on your aircraft?
Upper Class is Virgin’s business class rather than a first cabin, and the Retreat Suite is a handful of seats on selected A330neo aircraft rather than the standard one — so we tell you which aircraft and which seat you are getting.

Quick answer
Is Upper Class first class, and is the Retreat Suite on your aircraft?
Upper Class is Virgin’s business class, not a first cabin — there is no separate first product on its current long-haul fleet. The Retreat Suite is its largest Upper Class seat, and there are two of them per aircraft on the A330neos flying today, so it is not what a standard Upper Class ticket buys.
Virgin returned to Canada on 30 March 2025 with a daily Heathrow to Toronto Boeing 787-9, and flies Heathrow to Johannesburg daily in around eleven hours.
Route facts checked 15 September 2026. Aircraft carrying six Retreat Suites are on order but were delayed in September 2026, so the two-seat layout is what flies for now.
If you want a first-class ticket this is the wrong airline. If you want a lie-flat business seat, we name the aircraft.
- Upper Class is business class, not first
- Two Retreat Suites per A330neo, not a cabin
- Virgin Points are not Avios
- Virgin does not fly to Australia

Carrier facts checked 15 September 2026. Aircraft assignments change, and a schedule change can move you to a different cabin while the ticket stays valid — so we confirm the type on your dates before you commit.
Virgin Atlantic Upper Class is business class. It is not a first-class cabin with a different name. The word people search is often “Retreat Suite”. That is a small number of seats on selected A330neo aircraft, not the default Upper Class ticket. Older herringbone Upper Class (A330-300 and some 787-9s) is a different seat without that suite-door story.

Is Upper Class first class?
No. Upper Class is Virgin Atlantic’s business class.
There is no separate first cabin on Virgin’s current long-haul product. If you want a first-class ticket, this is the wrong airline page. If you want a lie-flat business seat from the UK, Upper Class is the product — then we still have to name the aircraft.
Is the Retreat Suite included when I book Upper Class?
Not automatically.
The Retreat Suite is Virgin’s largest Upper Class seat, and it is scarcer than the marketing suggests. On the A330neos flying today there are two of them per aircraft — the centre pair in the first row. A newer layout carrying six, including window suites, belongs to aircraft still on order, and those were delayed in September 2026, so it is not what you can book now. Treat Retreat as a specific seat request, not as “what Upper Class looks like in the advert”. Standard suites on newer A330neo and A350 metal are a different, more common product. If the Retreat is why you chose Virgin, say so on the enquiry.

Which Upper Class seat is on my flight?
It depends on the type. We confirm it; we do not freeze a fleet census here.
- A330-900neo — newer Upper Class suites; Retreat Suite only in the small number of those seats on selected layouts.
- A350-1000 — newer Upper Class suites. The Loft can appear on this type. Not a Retreat by default.
- A330-300 and some 787-9s — older herringbone Upper Class; typically no suite door. Direct aisle access is still the usual story on this layout, which is a different problem from BA’s older 2-4-2 Club World.
The Loft, The Booth and The Bar are onboard social spaces that vary by aircraft. They are a reason to choose Virgin if you want to leave the seat. They are irrelevant if you intend to close a door and sleep — and they are not on every type in the same form.
When is Virgin the UK commercial shape?
When the trip is transatlantic (or another city Virgin actually serves) and Upper Class on that metal is the product you want.
Virgin’s London long-haul home is typically Heathrow Terminal 3, not BA’s Terminal 5. Manchester has operated Virgin long-haul; Gatwick has appeared seasonally. Name the origin. Do not assume a Heathrow T5 BA ticket and a T3 Virgin ticket are the same ground day.
Destinations this often sits beside: New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Toronto and Vancouver when Upper Class is in the Canada conversation, Johannesburg and Cape Town when Upper Class is in the South Africa conversation. Virgin is not an Australia/New Zealand airline. For Sydney, Perth or Auckland see those destination pages and carriers that actually fly the routing.

Virgin Points are not Avios
Virgin is in SkyTeam. Miles sit in Flying Club as Virgin Points. They will not behave like British Airways or Qatar Avios. If Avios is how you travel, read British Airways and Qatar Airways first.
Virgin Atlantic vs British Airways
Same ocean, different terminals, different cabin names, different loyalty.

Also: Emirates if the city is actually a Dubai connection.

Virgin Atlantic Upper Class — practical questions
Is Virgin Atlantic Upper Class first class?
No. Upper Class is Virgin Atlantic’s business class. There is no separate first cabin on the current long-haul product. If you want a first-class ticket, this is the wrong airline.
Is the Retreat Suite included with every Upper Class ticket?
No. The Retreat Suite is a small number of seats on selected A330neo aircraft. Virgin currently markets six Retreat Suites on some of those A330neo layouts. Treat it as a seat request, not as the default Upper Class product.
Does every Virgin Upper Class seat have a door?
No. Newer suites on A330neo and A350 typically have a privacy door. Older herringbone Upper Class on A330-300 and some 787-9s typically does not. Direct aisle access is still the usual story on the herringbone — unlike BA’s older 2-4-2 Club World.
Which London terminal does Virgin Atlantic use?
Heathrow Terminal 3 is the usual London long-haul home — not BA’s Terminal 5. Manchester has operated Virgin long-haul; Gatwick has appeared seasonally. Name the origin you can use.
Can I use Avios on Virgin Atlantic?
No. Virgin is SkyTeam. Miles sit in Flying Club as Virgin Points. They will not behave like British Airways or Qatar Avios.
Does Virgin Atlantic fly to Australia or New Zealand?
No. Virgin is not an Australia/New Zealand airline. See our Sydney, Perth or Auckland guides, and the carriers that actually fly those routings.
How does Virgin Atlantic compare with British Airways?
Same ocean is not the same product. Virgin sells Upper Class (business class) and is often a transatlantic T3 story. BA sells Club World (Club Suite vs older 2-4-2) and is usually T5 with a broader long-haul map. Compare the metal on the same dates.
What are The Loft, The Booth and The Bar?
Onboard social spaces that vary by aircraft. Virgin’s own page says some flights have The Loft, The Booth or The Bar. They matter if you want to leave the seat. They are irrelevant if you intend to sleep behind a door.
How much is Virgin Atlantic Upper Class from the UK?
