Quick answer

Which UK airport should you fly from for business class to Johannesburg?

Every UK nonstop to Johannesburg leaves Heathrow — Virgin Atlantic publishes a daily service and British Airways several flights a day. But our cheapest current guide fare is £1,593 from Manchester (MAN), not London.

The two are within a couple of pounds of each other on our current guide fares, which makes this a rare route where a connection and a nonstop cost effectively the same. Virgin publishes the Heathrow flight time as around 11 hours.

Figures were checked and are dated guide fares. Which UK origin is cheapest can change when they are refreshed.

If the fares really are level on your dates, take the nonstop. Paying the same to add a connection to an overnight flight is the one trade here with no upside.

  • All UK nonstops to Johannesburg leave Heathrow
  • Virgin Atlantic publishes a daily Heathrow service
  • Virgin states around 11 hours flight time
  • The fare prices to O.R. Tambo International (JNB)
  • Cape Town is a separate airport and a separate fare

Johannesburg is the one long-haul route we cover where leaving from Manchester and leaving from London cost almost exactly the same — and only one of those is a nonstop. That makes the UK departure question unusually easy to get wrong.

Every UK nonstop leaves Heathrow

Two carriers publish a nonstop from Britain to Johannesburg, and both fly it from London Heathrow.

  • Virgin Atlantic publishes a daily Heathrow–Johannesburg service and states a flight time of around 11 hours.
  • British Airways appears in Heathrow's own departure information on several Johannesburg flight numbers, which is consistent with more than one departure a day.

No UK regional airport publishes its own Johannesburg nonstop. A fare quoted from Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow or Newcastle is therefore buying a connection — usually through a European or Gulf hub — as well as a long-haul seat.

One thing worth naming before you book: Heathrow also lists Johannesburg departures under an Iberia flight number. That is a marketing code, not a second Spanish airline flying you to South Africa. On this route in particular, ask who is operating the aircraft rather than whose code is on the ticket.

Why the regional fare is level with London, and what you give up

On current guide fares the cheapest UK guide fare to Johannesburg is £1,593 return from Manchester (MAN), checked — and the London fare sits within a couple of pounds of it. The departure board shows the whole ladder.

That is unusual. On most long-haul routes a regional fare carries a clear premium because it is buying a connection; here the connection is priced level with the nonstop. The spread across all five UK origins on this route is narrow — far narrower than on Ottawa or Kuwait, where the gap runs into hundreds of pounds.

The practical consequence is simple and it runs against the usual advice. Normally the question is "is the nonstop worth the premium?" On Johannesburg, at these figures, there is no premium to weigh. Johannesburg from the UK is an overnight northbound and a long day southbound; adding a hub stop to that for the same money buys you nothing but a second boarding.

Ask us to price both anyway. If your dates move the ladder, the answer moves with it.

Which seat you actually get, and where first class fits

"Business class to Johannesburg" does not describe one product, and the reason is fleet rather than route.

British Airways publishes Club Suite as installed on its A350, all Boeing 777 types, the 787-8, the 787-10 and — in progress — the 787-9, and states it is on more than two-thirds of its long-haul aircraft at Heathrow. It does not publish which cabin is on which route. So on any BA long-haul rotation, including this one, roughly one aircraft in three at Heathrow may still carry the older Club World layout. We do not assume; we check the aircraft on your dates.

On first class: the indicative first fare is £2,925. Virgin Atlantic's premium cabin is Upper Class, which is a business cabin and not a first cabin, so a genuine first class itinerary to Johannesburg depends on the operating carrier and the aircraft rather than on the route existing. If first class is what you want, say so and we will tell you whether it is actually available on your dates rather than quoting a figure and hoping.

O.R. Tambo (JNB) — and why it is not Cape Town

The arrival is O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), east of the city in Ekurhuleni. It is the arrival for Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria and the wider Gauteng business region.

The mistake we see most often is not a second Johannesburg airport — it is buying the wrong South African city.

These are separate fares with separate route realities, and they are roughly two hours apart by air. A Johannesburg arrival for a Cape Town diary is a domestic sector and half a day. If the trip genuinely takes in both, tell us and we will price it as one itinerary rather than two tickets.

What to confirm before you book

  • Whether your fare is the Heathrow nonstop or a connection — at these figures the difference is the product, not the price.
  • Who is operating each sector, not whose code is on the ticket.
  • Which business cabin is fitted to the aircraft on your dates, given that not every Heathrow long-haul aircraft carries the newer suite.
  • The arrival is JNB, not CPT or DUR.
  • If first class matters, whether it exists on the operating carrier and aircraft at all — before comparing the fare with anything.

Johannesburg is one of three arrivals in this region with a UK service the airline publishes. Our guide to business class across Africa and the Indian Ocean sets out which the others are.

Travellers often ask about safety before they ask about the fare. We are a travel company rather than a security authority, so we do not publish a verdict of our own — current Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advice is the thing to read, and it is the first thing our separate guide to what a UK business trip to Johannesburg actually involves points you at. That guide covers the part we do know: how the journey, the arrival and the ground transfer are put together.

FAQs

What do travellers ask about business class to Johannesburg?

Prefer to talk? +447348617176 .

How much is business class to Johannesburg from the UK?

The lowest indicative guide fare we currently hold is £1,593 return from Manchester (MAN), checked. What makes this route unusual is how little the UK origins differ — the ladder is one of the narrowest we publish.

Which airlines fly nonstop from the UK to Johannesburg?

Virgin Atlantic publishes a daily Heathrow to Johannesburg service, and British Airways appears in Heathrow's departure information on several Johannesburg flight numbers. Both fly from Heathrow. No UK regional airport publishes its own Johannesburg nonstop.

How long is the flight from London to Johannesburg?

Virgin Atlantic publishes around 11 hours for its Heathrow service. It is an overnight northbound and a long daytime sector southbound, which is the main argument for taking the nonstop where the fares are level.

Can I fly to Johannesburg from Manchester in business class?

Yes, but not nonstop — no UK regional airport publishes a Johannesburg nonstop, so a Manchester fare is buying a connection as well as a seat. On current guide fares that connection is priced within a couple of pounds of the London nonstop, which is worth knowing before you choose it.

Is it better to fly nonstop or connect to Johannesburg?

When the fares are effectively level, as they are on current guide fares, the nonstop is the better buy: you are otherwise paying the same money to add a hub stop to an overnight flight. If your dates open a real gap, we will show you both and let you weigh it.

Why does an Iberia flight number appear for Johannesburg?

Heathrow lists a Johannesburg departure under an Iberia code. That is a marketing flight number rather than a separate airline flying the sector. We name the operating carrier on the quote so you know which aircraft and cabin you are actually buying.

Will I get British Airways Club Suite to Johannesburg?

British Airways publishes Club Suite as fitted to its A350, all 777 types, the 787-8 and 787-10, with the 787-9 in progress, and says it is on more than two-thirds of its long-haul aircraft at Heathrow. It does not publish this by route, so roughly one aircraft in three may still have the older layout. We check the aircraft on your dates.

Is first class available to Johannesburg?

We currently hold a first class fare from £2,925. Virgin Atlantic's Upper Class is a business cabin rather than a first cabin, so whether a genuine first class itinerary exists depends on the operating carrier and the aircraft. We confirm that before quoting it.

Which airport does this Johannesburg fare use?

O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), east of the city in Ekurhuleni, serving Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria and the wider Gauteng region.

Should I fly to Johannesburg or Cape Town?

Fly to the city you actually need. They are separate fares roughly two hours apart by air, and a Johannesburg arrival for a Cape Town diary means a domestic sector and half a day. If the trip covers both, tell us and we will price it as one itinerary.

Are these Johannesburg fares guaranteed?

No. The unusual thing about this route is how tightly the UK origins sit together, and that relationship moves when the figures are refreshed — the cheapest departure today may not be the cheapest next month. Checked.

How do I get a Johannesburg business class quote?

Use the enquiry form above or email info@expertsbusinessfirst.co.uk. Give us your dates and tell us whether a nonstop matters to you, because on this route that is the decision rather than the price.
