Quick answer

Which Heathrow terminal do you need for a Chicago flight?

It depends entirely on the airline. Heathrow lists British Airways in Terminal 5 with some services in Terminal 3, American Airlines in Terminal 3 and United Airlines in Terminal 2 — three operators on one city pair, in three different buildings.

That matters more on Chicago than on most routes, because it is one of the few American cities with three UK operators, so the terminal is not a property of the destination at all.

Terminal assignments are Heathrow's own and can change. Our guide fare is £1,629 return from London (LON), checked.

Check the terminal before you book a connecting domestic flight or a car. Getting the airline right and the building wrong costs the same as missing the flight.

  • American Airlines: Heathrow Terminal 3
  • United Airlines: Heathrow Terminal 2

Chicago is one of very few American cities where three airlines will sell you a nonstop from Heathrow — and they leave from three different terminals. On this route the building matters as much as the carrier.

Three operators, three Heathrow terminals

Heathrow's own airline information places the three carriers on this city pair as follows.

Three terminals for one destination is genuinely unusual, and it has a consequence a booking engine will not spell out: if you are connecting from a UK regional flight, the terminal you need depends on which airline's Chicago flight you bought, not on the fact that you are going to Chicago. An inter-terminal transfer at Heathrow is not a walk, and the minimum connection a search engine will sell is not the connection an experienced traveller would choose.

Terminal assignments are Heathrow's own and they change. We confirm the terminal on the quote rather than leaving you to find out at the barrier.

O'Hare (ORD), not Midway (MDW)

The arrival is Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD). Chicago has a second commercial airport, Midway (MDW), and the two are not interchangeable.

The Chicago Department of Aviation publishes the scale difference plainly: the O'Hare complex covers more than 7,200 acres with eight active runways and, as of April 2026, 199 gates; Midway covers about 775 acres. Both sit within the City of Chicago, but they are not the same proposition, and the UK long-haul arrival is O'Hare.

If a quote shows MDW, it is not a cheaper version of the same journey — it is a different airport reached a different way, and on a short trip the ground time will undo the fare difference.

Are you flying to Chicago, or through it?

This is the question that most often makes a Chicago fare look wrong, and it has nothing to do with the price.

O'Hare is one of the world's largest connecting hubs. A great deal of the premium seats on a Heathrow–Chicago aircraft is bought by passengers who are not stopping in Chicago at all — they are continuing to the Midwest, the Mountain West or the West Coast. Those passengers compete with you for the same seat, and they are the reason a Chicago fare can behave oddly relative to a smaller city.

If Chicago is your destination, this is your fare. If Chicago is a connection, the fare that applies is the one on your final destination's page, and we will quote that instead — a through fare priced end to end is almost always better than a Chicago ticket with something bolted on. The same logic decides between Chicago and the other big eastern gateway: if the diary is Manhattan rather than the Loop, business class to New York is the fare, not this one. And if the trip is the upper Midwest rather than Chicago itself, business class flights to Detroit covers the other northern gateway.

What your UK departure costs, and the Glasgow anomaly

Our current indicative business class guide fare to Chicago is £1,629 return from London (LON), checked, with first class indicatively from £2,577.

The regional ladder on this route does not run in the order most people expect. On current guide fares Glasgow sits below both Birmingham and Newcastle — Scotland is not the expensive option here, which is the reverse of the pattern on most transatlantic routes we cover. The departure board shows the current order.

We are not going to dress that up as a rule. It is what our current fares hold on one check date, and they move. But it is a good reason to ask for your own airport's figure rather than assuming the ladder runs north to south.

Before you book a Chicago ticket

  • Confirm the Heathrow terminal for the specific airline you are booked on — three carriers, three buildings.
  • Allow more than the minimum connection if you are coming off a UK regional flight into a different terminal.
  • Confirm the arrival is ORD, not MDW.
  • Tell us if Chicago is a connection rather than your destination — the right fare is a different one.
  • Ask for your own UK airport's figure. On this route the ladder does not run in the usual order.

Chicago is priced to O’Hare, not Midway. Our guide to business class across the United States compares the thirty arrivals.

FAQs

What do travellers ask about business class to Chicago?

Prefer to talk? +447348617176 .

How much is business class to Chicago from the UK?

The lowest indicative guide fare we currently hold is £1,629 return from London (LON), checked. With three carriers on this city pair the figure you are offered depends heavily on which one the itinerary is built on.

Which airlines fly nonstop from London to Chicago?

Heathrow's own information lists British Airways, American Airlines and United Airlines on this city pair — three operators, which is more than most American cities get from the UK.

Which Heathrow terminal do I need for Chicago?

It depends on the airline. Heathrow lists British Airways in Terminal 5 with some Chicago services in Terminal 3, American Airlines in Terminal 3, and United Airlines in Terminal 2. Confirm the terminal for your specific booking before arranging a connection or a car.

Does the Chicago flight go to O'Hare or Midway?

O'Hare (ORD). Midway (MDW) is Chicago's second commercial airport and is not the UK long-haul arrival. The Chicago Department of Aviation publishes O'Hare at over 7,200 acres with eight active runways and 199 gates as of April 2026, against about 775 acres at Midway.

I am connecting through Chicago — is this the right fare?

No. The fare here is for Chicago as the destination. If you are continuing beyond O'Hare, the fare that applies is the one on your final destination's page, and a through fare priced end to end is almost always better than a Chicago ticket with a sector added.

Why can business class to Chicago cost more than to a smaller US city?

O'Hare is one of the world's largest connecting hubs, so much of the premium cabin on a Heathrow to Chicago aircraft is bought by passengers continuing elsewhere. They compete with you for the same seat. That is a commercial pattern, not a promise about your dates.

Is it cheaper to fly to Chicago from Scotland or from the Midlands?

On current guide fares Glasgow sits below both Birmingham and Newcastle, which is the reverse of the usual transatlantic pattern. That is one dated observation from our own figures rather than a rule, so ask us for your own airport rather than assuming.

How long is the flight from London to Chicago?

It is a daytime westbound transatlantic sector and an overnight eastbound return, which is the main comfort argument for a lie-flat seat on the way home rather than on the way out. We confirm the scheduled times on your dates.

Is first class available to Chicago?

We currently hold a first class fare from £2,577. With three carriers on the route, the cabins above business differ between them, so the useful question is whose first cabin you are being offered rather than whether first to Chicago exists.

Are these Chicago fares guaranteed?

No. Three competing operators and a large connecting market mean the figure moves with the carrier and the direction of travel as well as the date. Checked.
